Lying is a sin in the Bible because it is a violation of the truth that includes a conscious intent to deceive. The Bible teaches that lying is a great sin against God, against the Church, and against love (1 John 1:8-10). Lying is also a form of deception that can lead to worse evils, such as habitually concealing one's sins, removing any sense of moral boundaries, and making it easier to commit other crimes (Proverbs 10:9-10).

The Bible explicitly condemns lying in various passages. For example, Paul writes, Do not lie to one another (Ephesians 4:25), and the author of Hebrews says, In God's oath and promise it is impossible for God to lie (Hebrews 6:18). Jesus also warns against lying, saying, Simply let your Yes be Yes, and your No, No (Matthew 5:37). Furthermore, the Bible teaches that lying is a characteristic of Satan, who delights in falsehood (John 8:44). In contrast, God is truth, and His word embodies truth (John 17:17).

In the Bible, lying is not just a sin, but a serious offense that can have severe consequences. The Bible warns that a false witness will not go unpunished (Proverbs 19:5), and that those who speak lies will not escape (Proverbs 19:5). In Revelation 21:8, it is written that all liars will be found in the lake that burns with fire and sulfur, far from the heavenly city.
