The Illusion of Abandonment

When we experience suffering or hardship, it's natural to wonder if God has abandoned us. We may feel like He's not there for us, or that He's not helping us in the way we need. However, this perspective is often based on a faulty understanding of God's character and purposes. We may assume that God's love for us means He should always intervene in our lives, rescuing us from pain and hardship. But the Bible teaches us that God's love for us is not about rescuing us from every difficulty, but about developing our character and drawing us closer to Himself through suffering.

God's Sovereignty and Our Limited Understanding

As the author notes, we may not understand why God allows us to suffer, but that doesn't mean He's not present or that He doesn't love us. In fact, the Bible teaches us that God's ways are higher than our ways, and His thoughts are higher than our thoughts (Isaiah 55:8-9). We may not see the bigger picture, but God's purposes are not always about our immediate happiness or comfort. He's working out a greater good in our lives, even when we can't see it. As the author says, "It is to our gain that he permits us to know and serve him, and it is our loss if we reject that opportunity."

Surrendering to God's Plan

So what does this mean for us when we're facing suffering or hardship? It means surrendering to God's plan, even when we don't understand it. It means trusting that He's working out a greater good in our lives, even if it's not what we would have chosen. As the author says, "It is only through abandonment of yourself and your circumstances that you will find the freedom to live the life God has called you to." When we surrender to God's plan, we open ourselves up to His presence and power, even in the midst of suffering. We learn to trust Him, not because we understand everything, but because we know that He loves us and is working out a greater good in our lives.
