The Nature of Debt

Debt can be a significant burden that affects not only one's financial stability but also one's sense of security and pride. In the context of Scripture, debt is viewed as a serious matter that requires careful attention and obedience to God's principles. As the Apostle Paul writes, "Render all due obedience to the civil authorities. They in their way are servants of God" (Romans 13:1). So, how can we get out of debt without losing our home, car, credit score, sense of security, and sense of pride? The answer lies in adhering to a budget, being mindful of our spending habits, and avoiding debt in the first place. As the Bible reminds us, "Your spending habits (e.g., credit card debt) are preventing your family's needs (not wants) from being met" (Proverbs 22:7). We must be careful not to accumulate debt that can lead to financial ruin. Instead, we should prioritize our needs over our wants and make responsible financial decisions.

Seeking God's Guidance

In times of financial struggle, it is easy to feel overwhelmed and uncertain about the future. However, the Bible encourages us to seek God's guidance and provision in our financial decisions. As the Psalmist writes, "Oh! to grace how great a debtor Daily I am constrained to be" (Psalm 130:3). This means that we must acknowledge our dependence on God and seek His wisdom and guidance in managing our finances. By doing so, we can break free from debt and live a life that is characterized by financial stability, peace, and contentment. As the Bible reminds us, "Do you claim to know the love and grace of God in your own life? Prove your claim, then, by going and praying likewise" (Matthew 7:21-23). By seeking God's guidance and provision, we can overcome the struggle with debt and live a life that is pleasing to Him.
