The Pain of Loss and the Love of God

The question of why God took a loved one from us can be a heavy burden to bear. It can be like a weight that presses down on us, making it hard to breathe. It can make us wonder if God really loves us, or if He's just a distant figure who doesn't care about our pain. But the truth is, God is not distant. He is a loving Father who cares deeply about our pain and our struggles. He is not the one who caused our loved one's death, but He is the one who can bring us comfort and peace in the midst of our grief.

A Theology of Suffering

For many of us, our theology of suffering is based on a faulty assumption. We think that God loves us and wants to heal us, therefore He must heal us. But this is not always the case. Sometimes God allows us to suffer because He wants to use us in a way that we cannot see. He wants to bring us to a place of dependence on Him, where we will look to Him for our strength and our comfort. This is not because He is cruel or uncaring, but because He loves us and wants to use us in a way that will bring Him glory. As the psalmist wrote, "He sent from above, He took me; He drew me out of many waters. He delivered me from my strong enemy, from those who hated me, for they were too strong for me" (Psalm 91:14).

The Love of God

So why did God take our loved one from us? It's not because He doesn't love us, but because He loves us too much to leave us in our sin and our pain. He wants to bring us to a place of dependence on Him, where we will look to Him for our strength and our comfort. He wants to use us in a way that will bring Him glory, and to do that, He may allow us to suffer. But even in the midst of our suffering, we can find comfort in the love of God. We can trust that He is working all things together for our good, and that He will bring us through the dark times into a brighter day. As the psalmist wrote, "My eyes are ever on the Lord, for only he will release my feet from the snare" (Psalm 25:15). We can trust that God loves us, and that He will bring us through the pain of loss into a place of peace and comfort.
