Your Question:

Can I still have a purpose with a terminal illness?

Answer:

As a pastor, I've had the privilege of walking alongside many individuals who are facing terminal illnesses. And I must say, it's a challenging but also a beautiful thing to see. Chronic illness can reveal the kind of people we are, and it's in sacrificially caring for others that we celebrate a love for life, for theirs and ours, as well as the God who sovereignly gives life as well as calls us to be a caring community.

When it comes to purpose, I believe it's essential to remember that it's personal and must come from how we ourselves found purpose. When we're facing a terminal illness, it's easy to lose sight of our purpose, but I want to encourage you that you still have a purpose. Your purpose is not defined by your illness, but by your relationship with God and the love you share with others. As the Scripture says, "Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters, whenever you face trials of many kinds" (James 1:2). This doesn't mean that we should seek out suffering, but rather that we can find joy and purpose in the midst of it.

As I reflect on my own life, I'm reminded of the importance of perseverance and hope. When we're facing a terminal illness, it's easy to feel like giving up, but I want to encourage you to keep fighting. As the Apostle Paul said, "I can do all this through him who gives me strength" (Philippians 4:13). You are not alone in this journey, and you have a community of people who care about you and want to support you. So, don't lose sight of your purpose, and don't give up hope. Keep fighting, and know that you are loved and valued, no matter what.
