The Necessity of Mercy in a World of Justice

Mercy is an essential attribute of God, and as such, it is a quality that believers should strive to emulate in their own lives. While justice is necessary to uphold the moral standards of society, mercy is what brings life-giving care and relief to those in need. In a world where justice can sometimes seem harsh and unforgiving, mercy is what reminds us of God's love and compassion. As the Bible says, "The Lord is merciful and gracious, slow to anger, and abounding in mercy" (Psalm 103:8). This means that mercy is not just an optional virtue, but a fundamental aspect of God's character.

The Vicarious Satisfaction of Justice

When it comes to showing mercy, one of the key principles is that justice must be satisfied vicariously. This means that the penalty for sin is not borne by the individual, but by someone else, such as Christ. This is the highest form of mercy, because it requires the offended party to permit a substitution of penalty. In the case of God, this is achieved through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus (Romans 3:24). When we show mercy to others, we are not ignoring justice, but rather satisfying it in a way that brings life and hope to those in need. This is why the Bible says, "He that covereth his sins shall not prosper: but whoso confesseth and forsaketh them shall have mercy" (Proverbs 28:13).

The Call to Mercy

As believers, we are called to be merciful, not just to those who are guilty, but also to those who are in need. This includes our own families, the church, and even governments. We are not just called to show mercy, but to participate in civic activities and influence governmental policies to make them more consistent with biblical moral values. When we show mercy, we are not just exercising a virtue, but revealing the principles on which God makes his choices. We are showing that we trust in God's justice and mercy, and that we believe in the power of redemption through Christ. As the Bible says, "Let the wicked forsake his way, and the unrighteous man his thoughts: and let him return unto the LORD, and he will have mercy upon him" (Isaiah 55:7). This is the call to mercy that we must heed, if we want to reflect God's character in our own lives.
