Understanding God's Sovereignty in Suffering

When faced with the question of why God allowed a loved one to die, it's essential to acknowledge God's sovereignty over all creation. As the Psalmist wrote, "My God, my God, why have you forsaken me? Why must this suffering go on so long?" (Psalm 22:1). The Psalmist's cry reflects the human experience of struggling with God's apparent absence in times of suffering. However, we must remember that God's ways are not our ways, and His thoughts are not our thoughts (Isaiah 55:8-9). He is the One Who suffered for us, and His decision to allow suffering is not a contradiction of His love for us.

The Purpose of Suffering

It's crucial to understand that suffering is not a means to an end, but rather an opportunity for us to draw closer to God. As Jesus said, "I have come to destroy the devil's work, not to destroy those who are mine" (John 10:10). When we suffer, we have the opportunity to cry out to God, just like Mary and Martha did when their brother Lazarus died (John 11:32). The book of Psalms is full of suffering people crying out to God and asking why He isn't helping them. However, we must remember that God's decision is the bottom line, and we must trust in His sovereignty.

Finding Comfort in God's Presence

In the midst of suffering, it's easy to become overwhelmed by questions of why God allowed our loved one to die. However, we must remember that God is present with us in our suffering. As the Psalmist wrote, "The friendship of God (29:4) is all that matters now" (Job 6:1-7:21). We must not assume that God is making us jump through unnecessary hoops, but rather, He is the One Who suffered for us, and His presence is the greatest comfort we can have in times of suffering. We must trust in His sovereignty and know that He is working all things together for our good (Romans 8:28). Ultimately, our relationship with God is on a friend-to-friend basis, and He is the One Who can bring us through even the darkest of times.
