Reconciling Desire for Safety with Call to Take Risks for God

The desire for safety and the call to take risks for God can be a paradoxical tension in the life of a Christian. On one hand, God promises to be our shield and protector (Psalm 91:4), and we are encouraged to pray for safety and protection (Psalm 121:3). On the other hand, God often calls His people to walk a difficult path, even in the face of danger and uncertainty (Genesis 22:1-14). This tension can be reconciled by understanding that true safety and security come from placing our trust in God, rather than relying on our own efforts or circumstances.

When we seek to defend the faith, we must be careful not to rely solely on our own reasoning or understanding. We must be willing to trust God's sovereignty and wisdom, even when we don't fully understand His plans. As the psalmist says, "The Lord is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? The Lord is the stronghold of my life; of whom shall I be afraid?" (Psalm 27:1). We must also be careful not to portray God as loving and compassionate in a way that downplays His sovereignty and power. As A.W. Tozer said, "The Voice of God is a friendly Voice. No one need fear to listen to it unless he has already made up his mind to resist it." We must be willing to listen to God's voice, even when it calls us to take risks and step out in faith.

Ultimately, true safety and security come from trusting in God's goodness and sovereignty, even in the face of uncertainty and danger. When we place our trust in Him, we can be confident that He will guide us and protect us, even when we don't fully understand His plans. As the Bible says, "And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose" (Romans 8:28). We must be willing to take risks for God, even when it feels uncomfortable or uncertain, because we know that He is working all things for our good.
