Biblical Answer

The Bible teaches that tithing is an Old Testament principle that was commanded to the people of Israel (Lev. 27:30; Deut. 14:22). The Law prescribed that certain crops be tithed, but it was also a Pharisaic practice to tithe even garden herbs (11:42). Jesus accepted the principle of tithing, but emphasized that it was a matter of proportion, not just a literal one-tenth of all earnings (Matt. 23:23). The New Testament does not explicitly command Christians to tithe, but it is implied that they should give generously to support the local church (1 Cor. 16:1-2; 2 Cor. 9:6-7).

However, the Bible does emphasize the importance of giving to support the local church and the work of God. Jesus taught that where our treasure is, there our heart will be (Matt. 6:19-21), and that we should not store up earthly treasures, but rather store up heavenly treasures (Matt. 6:19-21). The Bible also teaches that God loves a cheerful giver (2 Cor. 9:7), and that we should give generously and sacrificially to support the work of God. The principle of tithing can be seen as a starting point for giving, but it is not a requirement for Christians.

In fact, many Christians have found that giving beyond the tithe has been a blessing to them, and has brought them closer to God. As Proverbs 3:9-10 says, "Honor the Lord with your wealth and with the firstfruits of all your crops; then your barns will be filled with plenty, and your vats will overflow with new wine." This verse emphasizes the importance of giving to God first, and trusting that He will provide for us. Ultimately, the Bible teaches that giving is not just about meeting a financial obligation, but about cultivating a heart of generosity and love for God.
