The Importance of Seeking Help

It is absolutely okay for Christians to seek professional help when they need it. In fact, the Bible encourages us to seek help when we are struggling with sin or sickness (Matthew 18:17, 1 John 3:17). The Bible teaches us to be kind and compassionate towards one another, especially when we see someone struggling (Galatians 6:2). This includes seeking help from professionals who can provide guidance and support.

Discernment in Seeking Help

When Christians seek help, it's essential to be discerning about the kind of help they seek. If they are struggling with sin, they should seek help from a Christian counselor or a pastor who can provide spiritual guidance. However, if they are struggling with a mental health issue, such as depression or anxiety, they should seek help from a professional counselor or therapist who is trained to deal with these issues. It's also essential to be cautious when seeking help from a 12-step program, such as AA. While these programs can be helpful, they may not provide the spiritual guidance that a Christian needs. Christians should ask themselves questions such as, "Is sin or sickness my primary problem?" and "Do I think of this as a spiritual issue or a physical issue?" (Romans 8:6-8).

Seeking Help from the Church

In addition to seeking professional help, Christians should also seek help from their church community. The Bible teaches us to bear one another's burdens and to support one another in times of need (Galatians 6:2, Hebrews 10:24-25). If a Christian is struggling with sin or sickness, they should seek help from their church leaders, such as a pastor or elder. The church can provide spiritual guidance, support, and accountability, which are essential for a Christian's spiritual growth and well-being. By seeking help from both professionals and their church community, Christians can receive the support and guidance they need to overcome their struggles and live a life that reflects their faith in Jesus Christ.
