Will We Have Bodies in Heaven?

The question of whether we will have bodies in heaven is a complex one, with various passages of Scripture offering differing perspectives. On one hand, there are indications that we will not have a material body in heaven. On the other hand, Jesus' resurrection and ascension suggest that he continues to exist in a human body in heaven. This seeming paradox can be resolved by considering the nature of our future bodies.

The Nature of Our Future Bodies

According to 1 Corinthians 15, our future bodies will be like Christ's glorious body (v. 21). They will be imperishable, not subject to decay or wear and tear (v. 42). In fact, our bodies will be so transformed that they will be like the body of Christ, with all its glory and majesty (v. 49). This transformation will not be a physical change, but rather a spiritual one, as we are conformed to the image of Christ. Our new bodies will be like Christ's in every way, and will be a reflection of our union with him.

The Significance of Our Bodies in Heaven

The fact that our bodies will be raised from the dead and transformed into new, glorious bodies means that they will have permanent significance. Our bodies will be a part of us forever, and will be a reflection of our union with Christ. This is in contrast to our current bodies, which are weak and corruptible (1 Cor. 15:42). Our new bodies will be a source of joy and intimacy with Christ, and will allow us to experience heaven in all its fullness. In heaven, we will be able to enjoy a deep and intimate relationship with Christ, one that is far beyond anything we can experience in this life. Our bodies will be a part of this experience, and will be a reflection of our union with Christ.
