The Biblical Perspective on Debt

The Bible does not entirely prohibit debt, but it does offer guidance on how to handle it. In the book of Romans, Paul writes, "I will repay it" (Romans 11:4), indicating that he is willing to accept responsibility for his own debts. However, he also advises, "Render all due obedience to the civil authorities" (Romans 13:1), suggesting that debt should be managed in a way that respects the laws and regulations of the land. The key is to maintain a "debt of love" (Romans 13:8), which means living a life of generosity, kindness, and compassion, even in the midst of financial challenges.

In terms of managing debt, the Bible emphasizes the importance of financial responsibility and stewardship. Proverbs 22:7 warns, "The rich rule over the poor, and the borrower is servant to the lender." This verse highlights the potential consequences of excessive debt, including loss of freedom and autonomy. On the other hand, Proverbs 21:5 encourages us to "plan your work and work your plan," implying that careful planning and management are essential for avoiding debt and achieving financial stability.

From a Christian perspective, debt can be a source of spiritual struggle and temptation. When we accumulate debt, we may feel anxious, stressed, and overwhelmed, leading us to seek comfort in things that are not ultimately satisfying. However, as we learn to manage our debt and live within our means, we can experience a sense of freedom and peace that comes from living a life of faith and trust in God. As the Bible says, "Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God" (Philippians 4:6).
