The Paradox of Independence and Suffering

The question of whether one can still be independent if paralyzed is a complex one that touches on the nature of human existence and our relationship with others. On one hand, we can define independence as the ability to make decisions and act on our own behalf, without being reliant on others. However, when we suffer a debilitating injury such as paralysis, our ability to act independently is severely limited. We may require the assistance of others to perform even the most basic tasks, such as eating, bathing, and communicating.

The Biblical Perspective on Suffering and Independence

From a biblical perspective, suffering is not something to be avoided at all costs. In fact, Jesus himself taught that we will face suffering and persecution as followers of Christ (John 16:33). However, he also promised that in the midst of suffering, we can find joy and peace through our relationship with him (John 15:11). This raises the question of whether we can still be independent in the face of suffering. The answer lies not in our ability to act independently, but in our willingness to remain faithful to God and trust in his sovereignty over our lives. As the apostle Paul wrote, "We are hard pressed on every side, but not crushed; perplexed, but not in despair; persecuted, but not abandoned; struck down, but not destroyed" (2 Corinthians 4:8-9). Even in the midst of suffering, we can remain independent in our faith and trust in God's goodness and love.

The Importance of Community and Dependence

While independence is an important aspect of human existence, it is not the only aspect. In fact, our dependence on others is a fundamental aspect of our humanity. As the philosopher Jean-Paul Sartre noted, our being is "dependent at the center on a freedom which is not mine and which is the very condition of my being." This means that we are not isolated individuals, but rather beings who are deeply connected to others and reliant on them for our existence. Even in the face of paralysis, we can still be independent in our faith and trust in God, but we will also need to rely on others for physical and emotional support. This paradox of independence and dependence is a fundamental aspect of the human experience, and one that we must confront and navigate as we seek to live out our faith in the midst of suffering.
