The Biblical Teaching on Divorce

The Bible is clear in its teaching on divorce. In Malachi 2:16, God says, "I hate divorce." This statement is not just a general dislike for divorce, but a strong condemnation of it. God sees divorce as a form of violence, which is why He hates it. This is reinforced by Jesus' teaching in Matthew 19:3-12, where He explains that God's original intent was for marriage to be a lifelong commitment. God's goal is for couples to be together, to be one, and to produce godly offspring. When couples disregard God's directives and seek divorce, they are dealing treacherously with their spouse and violating God's will.

The Exceptions to Divorce

While God hates divorce, there are exceptions where divorce is permitted. In Matthew 19:3-12, Jesus allows for divorce in cases of adultery. This is not because God condones divorce, but because it is a concession to the hardness of human hearts. In 1 Corinthians 7:15, the Apostle Paul also permits divorce in cases where an unbelieving spouse wants a divorce. In both cases, divorce is not the preferred option, but it is allowed as a last resort.

The Heart of the Matter

The heart of the matter is not whether God hates divorce or not, but why He hates it. God hates divorce because it violates His original intent for marriage, which is a lifelong commitment between one man and one woman. Divorce is a form of violence, a betrayal of trust, and a rejection of God's will. While there may be exceptions to divorce, the preferred option is always to seek reconciliation and to preserve the marriage. As Christians, we should strive to please God by honoring His directives and seeking to preserve our marriages, even in difficult circumstances. Ultimately, our goal should be to reflect God's character and to uphold His values in our relationships.
