Your Question:
How can we trust in God's sovereignty when our plans are constantly being disrupted?
Answer:
As I reflect on this question, I'm reminded of the trust that Susan and I have in God's sovereignty, even in the midst of life's disruptions. When we were planning our wedding 19 years ago, we never could have anticipated the twists and turns that our lives would take. But through it all, we've come to realize that God's plan was not suddenly made up as He went along, but was an eternal plan with Him. He knows the end from the beginning, and He will accomplish all His good purposes. This understanding of God's sovereignty should greatly increase our trust in Him, especially in difficult circumstances. When our plans are disrupted, it's easy to feel frustrated and uncertain about the future. But when we see that God's plan is efficacious, and what He has purposed from eternity will surely come to pass, we can have confidence that He is working everything out for our good. As the Bible says, "Surely, as I have planned, so will it be, and as I have purposed, so will it stand" (Isaiah 14:24). This perspective has been a source of comfort to me as a pastor, and as a father to Joshua and Rebecca. When they face challenges and setbacks, I remind them that God is sovereign, and that He is working all things together for their good. This doesn't mean that they are not responsible for their actions, but rather that they can trust in God's goodness and sovereignty, even when life doesn't go according to plan. As the psalmist says, "I will trust in the Lord and not be afraid. What can mere mortals do to me?" (Psalm 56:11).
