Understanding Financial Struggles

It's understandable to feel overwhelmed by financial struggles, and the question of whether one can afford to eat, let alone pay bills, is a valid concern. The Bible reminds us that we should not prioritize material wealth above spiritual well-being (Matthew 6:24). Jesus teaches us to seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and then all these things will be added to us (Matthew 6:33). This means that our financial priorities should be aligned with God's will, rather than solely focused on our own comfort and security.

The Myth of "I Can't Afford It"

When we say "I can't afford it," what we're often really saying is that we can't afford to prioritize God's commands and values in our lives. This can manifest in many ways, such as prioritizing work over health, or spending money on things that don't bring lasting satisfaction. The Bible teaches us that God provides for our needs, and that we should trust in His sovereignty (Philippians 4:19). This doesn't mean that we won't face financial challenges, but it does mean that we should approach them with faith and trust in God's provision.

Seeking God's Guidance

Rather than relying on our own abilities or resources, we should seek God's guidance and provision in our financial struggles. This involves praying for wisdom and direction, and trusting in God's sovereignty to provide for our needs. As the Apostle Paul wrote, "I have received full payment, and more. I am well supplied, having received from Epaphroditus the gifts you sent" (Philippians 4:18). This is not to say that we won't face challenges, but it is to say that we should trust in God's provision and guidance, rather than relying solely on our own resources. By seeking God's guidance and provision, we can find peace and trust in the midst of financial struggles. Jesus says, "Do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink; or about your body, what you will wear. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothes?" (Matthew 6:25). We must learn to trust in God's sovereignty and provision, rather than relying on our own abilities or resources.
