The Role of the Holy Spirit in Salvation and Human Agency

The Holy Spirit plays a crucial role in salvation, and understanding this role is essential for grasping the relationship between human agency and free will. The Bible teaches that the Holy Spirit is a personal agent who searches the deep things of God (1 Cor 2:10-12), opens our eyes to discern Him as Savior (Eph 1:17-19), and provides increasing light to comprehend His character as our Lord (Ps 119:130). This suggests that the Holy Spirit is necessary for human understanding and recognition of the truth.

The Bible also emphasizes the importance of the Holy Spirit in enabling humans to respond to God's plan of salvation. In John 16:8-11, Jesus says that the Holy Spirit will convict the world of sin, righteousness, and judgment, and that He will guide believers into all truth. This implies that the Holy Spirit is responsible for inclining the human will to respond to God's offer of salvation. However, this does not mean that human activity is unnecessary. Rather, the Holy Spirit works in conjunction with human cooperation to bring about salvation. As the Bible says, "For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast" (Eph 2:8-9).

The relationship between the Holy Spirit and human agency is complex, and it is essential to distinguish between creating anew, enabling, actuating, and inclining the human will and helping, assisting, and cooperating with it. The Holy Spirit does not force the human will but rather exerts a spiritual agency upon a spiritual being. This means that human freedom of choice is not eliminated but rather is exercised in response to the Holy Spirit's work. As the Bible says, "The will of man is free, but it is not free from the influences of the Holy Spirit" (Torrey, What the Bible Teaches, p. 229). The Holy Spirit's role is to guide, enable, and empower humans to respond to God's plan of salvation, and this requires a cooperative effort between the Holy Spirit and human agency.
