Understanding the Importance of Paying What You Owe

When it comes to paying for the things we need or want, it's easy to get caught up in the idea that God will magically provide for us if we just ask Him. However, the Bible teaches us that God is not a cosmic ATM machine, but rather a loving Father who desires a personal relationship with us. In order to build trust and intimacy with God, we must be willing to pay what we owe, not just to others, but also to God Himself.

The Parable of the Ungrateful Servant

The parable of the ungrateful servant in Matthew 18:21-35 illustrates the importance of paying what we owe. The servant who was forgiven a large debt by his king refused to forgive a smaller debt owed to him by another servant. This parable teaches us that if we are not willing to forgive others and pay what we owe, we cannot expect God to forgive us and provide for us. In fact, Jesus says that if we do not forgive others, God will not forgive us (Matthew 6:14-15). This means that our relationship with God is directly tied to our willingness to forgive and pay what we owe to others.

In the Bible, we are taught to be generous and willing to pay what we owe to others. Paul writes in Romans 13:7, "Give to everyone what you owe them: If you owe taxes, pay taxes; if revenue, then revenue; if respect, then respect; if honor, then honor." By doing so, we demonstrate our trust in God and our commitment to living a life that reflects His values.
