Understanding the Purpose of Prayer

Prayer is not primarily about getting answers from God, but about cultivating a deep and personal relationship with Him. When we pray, we are not just asking for things, but we are also communing with God and building a connection with Him. This relationship is what brings us joy, peace, and fulfillment. As the Bible says, "God listens to our prayers" (1 Kings 8:52; Psalms 6:9), and He does answer them. However, we must understand that God's answers may not always be what we expect or desire.

The Character of God and His Relationship to the World

God is not a genie who grants our wishes or a vending machine that dispenses answers to our prayers. He is a loving Father who wants to have a personal relationship with us. He is sovereign over all creation, and His ways are not our ways (Isaiah 55:8-9). When we pray, we must come to God with a humble and submissive heart, recognizing that He is God and we are not. We must also understand that God's answers may not always be what we want, but they are always what we need. As the Bible says, "And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good, for those who are called according to his purpose" (Romans 8:28).

Cultivating a Relationship with God

So, what is the point of having a relationship with God if He doesn't answer our prayers? The point is that our relationship with God is not about getting what we want, but about becoming what we need to be. When we pray, we are not just asking for things, but we are also seeking to become more like Christ. We are seeking to have a deeper understanding of God's character and will, and to be conformed to His image. As the Bible says, "We love because he first loved us" (1 John 4:19). When we cultivate a relationship with God, we discover that our lives are not about getting what we want, but about becoming what we need to be in Christ. And that is the greatest answer to prayer of all.
