The Dangers of Prioritizing Short-Term Gains in Relationships

When we prioritize short-term gains in our relationships, we often sacrifice long-term fulfillment and stability. This is because short-term gains are typically achieved through superficial means, such as impressing or enticing our partner, rather than building a deep and meaningful connection. When we focus on immediate gratification, we can become overly attached to the relationship, which can lead to an unhealthy and dependent dynamic.

Furthermore, prioritizing short-term gains can also lead to a lack of commitment and investment in the relationship. When we're not willing to put in the time and effort to build a strong foundation, we're more likely to bail when things get tough. This can lead to a cycle of short-term relationships, where we're constantly seeking the next thrill or excitement, rather than investing in a long-term partnership. As the Bible teaches, "A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another" (John 13:34-35). True love requires commitment, sacrifice, and a willingness to put the needs of our partner above our own desires.

In contrast, delaying marriage and prioritizing the development of friendship can lead to a stronger and more fulfilling relationship. By focusing on building a deep and meaningful connection, we can create a solid foundation for our relationship, which will serve us well in the long term. As the Bible teaches, "Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres" (1 Corinthians 13:4-7). By prioritizing love and commitment, we can build a relationship that is strong, stable, and fulfilling.
