Biblical Answer

Suffering is a complex and multifaceted issue that has puzzled philosophers, theologians, and everyday people for centuries. On the one hand, we may feel that God is distant and disinterested in our suffering, especially when it seems pointless and unnecessary. On the other hand, we are told that God is a loving God who cares deeply about us and wants us to know and trust Him. So, why does God allow suffering to occur? One possible answer is that God permits suffering in order to achieve His purposes and bring about our ultimate good. While we may not understand the reasons behind His actions, we can trust that He is working all things together for our benefit (Romans 8:28).

In addition, suffering can be a means of refining us and making us more like Christ. Through the fires of suffering, God can help us to become more patient, kind, and compassionate. As theologian Millard Erickson said, "God himself became the victim of evil so that he and we might be victors over evil." (Erickson) This idea is echoed in the story of Job, who underwent incomprehensible suffering but ultimately came to know God and become a changed man. In fact, suffering can be a catalyst for spiritual growth and intimacy with God. When we are faced with suffering, we are forced to confront our own limitations and weaknesses, and to seek refuge in God's presence.

Ultimately, the problem of suffering is not just an intellectual question, but a deeply personal one. It requires us to confront our own assumptions and expectations about God's character and His ways. As C. S. Lewis said, "God whispers to us in our pleasures, speaks in our conscience, but shouts in our pains: it is His megaphone to rouse a deaf world." (Lewis) Suffering can be a wake-up call, a reminder that we are not in control, and that our lives are not our own. By trusting in God's sovereignty and goodness, even in the midst of suffering, we can find hope and peace, and learn to see our struggles as opportunities for growth and intimacy with Him.
