Navigating the Tension between Biblical Teachings on Obedience and Modern Notions of Autonomy

The concept of autonomy has become a cornerstone of modern anthropology, emphasizing the idea of human independence from external authority. However, from a biblical perspective, this ideology is seen as relationally destructive and metaphysically impossible. The Bible teaches that humans are created in the image of God and are therefore accountable to Him. Obedience to God requires submission to His authority, which is not necessarily the same as obedience to human authorities. In fact, the Bible teaches that believers are to obey God rather than men when there is a conflict between the two (Acts 5:29).

This tension between biblical teachings on obedience and modern notions of autonomy is not new. Throughout history, there have been times when individuals have been called to obey God's commands even when they conflict with human authority. For example, the early church in Acts 5:29 was told to obey God rather than men when they were instructed to stop preaching about Jesus. Similarly, in the book of Hebrews, we are encouraged to obey God's commands, even if it requires us to disobey human authority (Hebrews 12:11). This obedience is not based on a desire to be independent or autonomous, but rather on a trust in God's love, care, and provision.

In navigating this tension, it is essential to understand that biblical obedience is not about ceding authority to human beings, but rather about submitting to God's authority. This submission is not always easy, and it may require us to disobey human authority. However, it is in this submission that we find true freedom and joy. As Jesus said, "If anyone serves Me, the Father will honor him" (John 12:26). Obedience to God is not about being autonomous, but about being submitted to His loving and redeeming authority. By embracing this obedience, we can experience the fullness of life and the joy of being in relationship with God.
