The Bible's Teaching on Marriage

The Bible teaches that marriage is a covenant relationship between a man and a woman. This is evident in Jesus' response to the Pharisees' question about divorce (Matt. 19:4-6). He quotes Genesis 2:24, which says, "Therefore a man shall leave his father and mother and hold fast to his wife, and they shall become one flesh." This verse confirms that marriage is a lifelong commitment between a man and a woman.

The Bible also teaches that marriage is a covenant that involves a lifelong commitment of love, honor, duty, service, faith, and obedience (Gen. 2:24; Prov. 5:15-23; Song 4:1-7; Mal. 2:14; Matt. 19:4-6; Eph. 5:25-33). This is in contrast to modern Western societies, which often view marriage as primarily an experience of romantic fulfillment. The Bible sees God as the supreme good, not the individual or the family, and therefore emphasizes the importance of faith and obedience in marriage.

The Bible's teaching on marriage is also clear on the issue of same-sex marriage. From a Christian perspective, same-sex marriage is not consistent with the Bible's teaching on marriage as a covenant relationship between a man and a woman (Gen. 1:27; 2:24; Matt. 19:4-6; Eph. 5:25-33). The Bible teaches that marriage is a union between two people of opposite sexes, and that this union is a reflection of the relationship between God and humanity. Therefore, same-sex marriage is not a valid or biblical understanding of marriage.
