The Sovereignty of God in Suffering

The question of why God allows us to suffer is a complex one that has puzzled many Christians. However, it is essential to recognize that God is sovereign over all creation, including suffering. His sovereignty is not limited by our understanding or expectations. God permits suffering to achieve His purposes, even if those purposes seem incomprehensible to us within our limited framework. As theologian Millard Erickson said, God himself became the victim of evil so that he and we might be victors over evil.

The Role of Suffering in Relationship with Christ

Suffering plays a significant role in our relationship with Christ. By following Jesus, we too must suffer, and this suffering gives us victory. Jesus learned obedience through suffering, and we will too. A path without hardships should cause us to wonder if we really belong to God. Suffering helps us to think as God thinks, to trust Him with the mysteries of suffering, and to find Him in our pain. It is not about avoiding suffering but about trusting God in the midst of it.

The Purpose of Suffering

The purpose of suffering is not to punish us or to make us suffer for our sins. Rather, it is to work grace into His people, to help us develop a deeper relationship with Him, and to prepare us for eternity. If God rewarded us immediately, we would be destroyed because of our inherent depravity. Suffering allows us to grow in our faith, to become more like Christ, and to understand His character. As C. S. Lewis said, "God whispers to us in our pleasures, speaks in our conscience, but shouts in our pains: it is His megaphone to rouse a deaf world." Ultimately, suffering is not the end, but it is a means to an end – to know and trust God. The challenge for us is to think as God thinks, to trust Him in the midst of suffering, and to find Him in our pain.
