The Problem of Suffering: A Biblical Perspective

The problem of suffering is a complex and age-old question that has puzzled people for centuries. Why does God allow us to suffer when we're trying to follow Him? This question is not only asked by unbelievers but also by believers who struggle to understand God's sovereignty in the midst of pain and suffering. As theologian Millard Erickson said, "God himself became the victim of evil so that he and we might be victors over evil." This statement highlights the idea that suffering can lead to victory and that God's purpose in allowing suffering is to bring us closer to Him.

Suffering and the Character of God

Suffering can lead us to question the character of God, making Him seem distant and disinterested. However, this is not the case. God's love for us is not diminished by our suffering. In fact, He suffered for us, leaving us an example to follow in His steps (1 Peter 2:21). Jesus' suffering on the cross was not a means to an end but the end itself. He is not just a way to get a better life, but He is the Resurrection and the Life. When God asks us to undergo suffering that seems unmerited, pointless, or unnecessary, it's essential to remember that He loves us so much that He gave up everything for us.

Suffering as a Means of Grace

Suffering can be a means of grace, allowing God to work in our lives and bring us closer to Him. If God rewarded us immediately, we would be destroyed because of our inherent depravity. Suffering allows us to develop a deeper relationship with God and to trust Him in the midst of pain and uncertainty. As C.S. Lewis said, "God whispers to us in our pleasures, speaks in our conscience, but shouts in our pains: it is His megaphone to rouse a deaf world." Suffering can be a catalyst for spiritual growth, helping us to think as God thinks and to follow Him, even in the midst of hardship. By trusting God in our suffering, we can find victory and come out stronger on the other side.
