Understanding Trust in God

Trust in God is not about avoiding difficulties or challenges in life, but about having confidence in His sovereignty and goodness, even in the midst of them. When everything falls apart, we can trust God because He will not let us be tested more than we can stand (1 Cor. 10:13). He will also make a way out so that we can bear it (1 Cor. 10:13). This trust is not based on our own strength or ability, but on the fact that God is holy love, and His way is right, even when all goes wrong (Psalm 31:19).

Developing Faith and Trust

Developing faith and trust in God requires perseverance and a daily personal time with Him. As we respond to God in obedience, we can develop a knack for trusting Him consistently. This means talking to Him and listening to Him, friend to friend, and establishing a prayer-relationship with Him. We can also learn to trust Him by facing losses and difficulties, and responding to Him in faith, rather than panicking or doubting. The ultimate example of such trust is Jesus, who faced his executioners with full confidence in the Lord (Psalm 4).

Cultivating Trust in God

Cultivating trust in God requires us to go beyond our own confidence in ourselves and others, and to place our trust in Him alone. This means believing steadfastly on Him and everything that challenges us will strengthen our faith (Hebrews 3:14). We must also seek Him, and experience more peace, less doubt, and less fear, because our trust is securely anchored in Him. To develop this trust, we must give ourselves to God, and make our faith a shield of protection, and unfailing certainty that what He has promised to do, He will do (Romans 4:21). Ultimately, trust in God is not about avoiding difficulties, but about having confidence in His sovereignty and goodness, even in the midst of them.
