The Mystery of Suffering

The question of why God allows cancer to exist is a complex and deeply personal one. As Christians, we are often faced with the challenge of explaining why God permits suffering and pain in the world. While we cannot provide a definitive answer to this question, we can offer some insights from Scripture and our understanding of God's character.

God's Sovereignty and Purposes

God is a sovereign God who is actively involved in the world and its affairs. He is not limited by our understanding of time and space, and His purposes may be far greater than what we can see or comprehend. As the Bible teaches, God is not the author of evil, but He does allow evil to exist in order to bring about His greater purposes (Isaiah 45:7; Job 1:21). This means that God may permit suffering and pain in order to achieve His goals, even if we do not fully understand why.

Faith and Trust in God

In the face of suffering and pain, it is easy to question God's goodness and love. However, as Christians, we are called to trust in God's goodness and sovereignty, even when we do not understand why things are happening. This requires faith and trust in God's character, even when the circumstances of our lives do not make sense. As the Bible teaches, we are to "consider it pure joy" when we face trials and suffering, because we know that God is using them to refine us and make us more like Christ (James 1:2-4). Ultimately, our trust in God must be based on His character and promises, rather than on our understanding of why He allows suffering and pain to exist.
