How do I stop being afraid?
Understanding Fears
The first step in dealing with fears is to confess them as unbelief. Much of our fear is rooted in our hearts saying, "Lord, I don't believe you" or "Lord, my desires want something more." When we start to list our biggest fears, we will quickly recognize common fears such as fear of the unknown, fear of failure, fear of rejection, and fear of loss. These fears can be overwhelming and may lead to feelings of depression.
Conquering Fears
To conquer fears, we need to confront them head-on. When fears haunt us, we can try to avoid them, but it's only by facing them that we can truly quiet them. It's essential to acknowledge our fears rather than dismissing or belittling them. We can also divert our minds from the thing feared to the fear itself, considered as a present and undesirable state of our own minds. By doing so, we can calm our hearts and trust in God's presence. The Bible says, "When I am afraid, I will trust in you" (Ps. 56:3).
Finding Strength in God
God promises to provide strength to those who sincerely ask. When we feel powerless, we can avoid or withdraw, but instead, we should seek God's presence and guidance. The Bible says, "The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom" (Proverbs 9:10). When we fear God, we will find strength to face our fears. We can also ask for help from others, such as a grandparent, an older woman, a pastor, or a counselor. By acknowledging our fears, confronting them, and seeking God's presence, we can find the strength to overcome them and live a life of faith and trust in God.
