Why did God abandon me in this pain?
The Pain of Abandonment
When we experience pain, it's natural to wonder if God has abandoned us. We may think, "If God loves me, why am I suffering?" or "Why did God let this happen to me?" This faulty theology of suffering is rooted in a misunderstanding of God's character and purposes. We assume that God's desire for our happiness and well-being means that He should always intervene to prevent suffering. However, this perspective ignores the fact that Jesus, the Son of God, suffered on the cross for our sins. He understands our pain and grief because He experienced it Himself.
God's Sovereignty and Love
God's sovereignty and love are not mutually exclusive. While God does not cause evil, He does allow it for reasons that are not always apparent to us. Our suffering can be a means of spiritual growth, character development, and perseverance. We may not understand why God allows us to suffer, but we can trust that He is working everything out for our good (Romans 8:28). Jesus' cry on the cross, "My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?" (Matthew 27:46), shows that even He did not understand the full extent of God's plan. However, He trusted God's love and sovereignty, and we can do the same.
A New Perspective
When we're in pain, we need to shift our focus from why God is allowing us to suffer to how He is meeting us in our suffering. We can pour out our hearts to Him, expressing our frustration, discontent, and pain. We can ask Him, "Why did you let this happen to me?" or "Why are you not intervening?" But we must also remember that God's love and sovereignty are not dependent on our circumstances. He is always with us, even in the midst of suffering. As we trust in His love and sovereignty, we can find comfort and peace, even in the midst of pain. We can learn to see our suffering as an opportunity for spiritual growth and character development, rather than as a sign of God's abandonment.
