The Tension Between Independence and Interdependence

The question of whether we can still be ourselves if we're not independent is a complex one. Robert D. Brinsmead argues that we can disobey God if we choose, and it will bring suffering. However, this does not necessarily mean that we are not free. An incompatibilist, or libertarian, perspective suggests that we are free as long as we are doing what we want to do. The Biblical Perspective on Independence

The Bible presents a nuanced view of independence. On one hand, God is described as independent in the sense that he does not need anything else for his existence. However, this does not mean that he is aloof or indifferent. God's independence is not a rejection of his relationship with humanity. In fact, the Bible teaches that believers are not independent agents, but are rather dependent on Christ (Colossians 3:9). Paul's contentment in Philippians 4:11-12 is not based on his independence, but on his dependence on Christ.

The Importance of Interdependence

The Bible teaches that our identity consists in our relationships with others. Paul's ipse identity is rooted in his commitments, roles, and activities. This raises the question of whether we can still be ourselves if we're not independent. The answer is yes, but only if we are willing to surrender our independence and interdependence with others. This means being willing to reduce ourselves down to simply who we are, without the expectations of others. It means being determined to hand over our simple naked self to God, and allowing Him to be our all in all. This is the key to true freedom and identity.
