Reflection on Financial Decisions

The decision to close your business can be a difficult and painful one, often stemming from poor financial choices. In my experience, I have seen firsthand the consequences of making hasty and uninformed decisions. When I made some "terrible financial decisions early in my ministry," I put the very existence of Thomas Road Baptist Church and Liberty University at risk. This was a sobering lesson in the importance of prudent financial planning and responsible stewardship. As a Christian, I believe it is essential to recognize God's sovereignty and providence in all aspects of life, including business. While I was ignorant of big business procedures, I was grateful for God's graciousness in allowing our ministry to emerge stronger from those challenges.

The Importance of Learning from Mistakes

Looking back, I can see that those difficult experiences were a crucial part of my growth and learning as a leader. The process of navigating the complexities of business and overcoming the obstacles that arose taught me valuable lessons about the importance of careful planning, attention to detail, and wise decision-making. As I reflect on those experiences, I am reminded of the biblical principle of learning from our mistakes and using them as opportunities for growth (Romans 5:3-4). While closing a business can be a painful process, it can also be a catalyst for personal and professional growth, as it forces us to confront our weaknesses and seek guidance from God and wise counsel.

Trust in God's Providence

In the midst of uncertainty and difficulty, it is essential to remember that God is sovereign over all creation, including the business world. As I navigated the challenges of closing Thomas Road Baptist Church and transitioning to Hobby Lobby, I was reminded of the importance of trusting in God's providence. Even in the midst of chaos and uncertainty, God can work all things together for good (Romans 8:28). As Christians, we are called to trust in God's goodness and sovereignty, even when the path ahead is unclear. By doing so, we can find peace and comfort in the midst of difficult circumstances, and we can emerge stronger and more resilient on the other side. Closing a business can be a difficult experience, but with God's guidance and provision, we can learn valuable lessons and grow in our faith and character.
