Confronting Our Own Mortality

When we're forced to confront our own mortality, it can be a daunting and unsettling experience. The fear of death is a natural human emotion that can be overwhelming. We often try to avoid thinking about it, but it's essential to acknowledge and accept the reality of our own mortality. As Paul says, "Our outer nature is wasting away" (2 Cor. 4:16). This aging process includes various kinds of physical ailments, and eventually, we will die.

The fear of death can lead us to take drastic measures, such as assisted suicide or euthanasia. However, this approach is not only morally wrong but also ignores the biblical perspective on death. Jesus teaches us that death is not the end, but rather a transition to eternal life. When we die, our souls will be reunited with our bodies at the resurrection, and we will be given new, perfect bodies (1 Cor. 15:42-44). This fact should bring us comfort and hope, rather than fear.

In confronting our own mortality, we must also acknowledge the limitations of human power and control. We can't stop death from coming, but we can choose how we live our lives in the face of it. We can choose to live with dignity, making decisions about our medical treatment and staying connected with loved ones. We can also choose to trust in God's sovereignty and plan, knowing that He will ultimately bring us to eternal life. By accepting our mortality and trusting in God's goodness, we can find peace and comfort in the face of death.
