Your Question:
What's the meaning of life when I'm stuck in this hospital bed?
Answer:
As I sit here, thinking about the meaning of life when one is stuck in a hospital bed, I am reminded of the words of the philosopher, Viktor Frankl. He said, "Ultimately, man should not ask what the meaning of his life is, but rather must recognize that it is he who is asked." In other words, life is not something that we can find outside of ourselves, but rather it is something that we must create and give meaning to. As a pastor, I have seen many people struggle with the same questions that you are facing. They often feel like they are just going through the motions, without any real purpose or direction. But I want to suggest that even in the midst of suffering and illness, there is still the possibility for meaning and purpose. This can be found in relationships with loved ones, in the pursuit of one's passions, and in the act of giving back to others. For me, as a Christian, the meaning of life is found in a relationship with God. As the Bible says, "Once you become aware that the main business that you are here for is to know God, most of life's problems fall into place of their own accord." Even in the midst of suffering and illness, this relationship can bring comfort, peace, and purpose. It is not something that can be found in medical treatment or external circumstances, but rather it is something that is found within.
