Why Does God Allow Anxiety?
The question of why God allows anxiety is a complex one that has puzzled many Christians. From a biblical perspective, anxiety is not something that God desires for us. In fact, Jesus explicitly forbade worry and anxiety in several passages, including Matthew 6:25 and Luke 12:22-23. However, despite these teachings, anxiety remains a common experience for many Christians. So, why does God allow anxiety to exist in our lives?
One reason God allows anxiety is to test our faith and trust in Him. When we are faced with anxiety, we are forced to choose between relying on our own strength and abilities or trusting in God's sovereignty and goodness. As the psalmist wrote, "When I am afraid, I will trust in you" (Ps. 56:3). By casting our cares on God and trusting in His ability to provide and protect us, we can find peace and calm in the midst of anxiety. This is not to say that God causes anxiety, but rather that He uses it as an opportunity to deepen our trust in Him and to reveal His character to us.
Another reason God allows anxiety is to remind us of our finiteness and dependence on Him. When we are anxious, we are often trying to control the circumstances of our lives and to build security through our own efforts. However, Jesus taught that such attempts will always lead to increased anxiety (Matthew 6:25-34). By allowing anxiety to enter our lives, God is reminding us of our need for Him and our inability to provide for ourselves. As the apostle Paul wrote, "My God will supply every need of yours according to his riches in glory in Christ Jesus" (Philippians 4:19). In this sense, anxiety can be seen as a gift that leads us to rely more fully on God and to trust in His goodness and provision.
