The Bitterness of Hopelessness

Hopelessness is a common experience for people who are facing terminal diagnoses. It is a feeling of despair and desperation that can be overwhelming. When we face the reality of our mortality, it can be difficult to maintain hope. The Bible reminds us that hope deferred makes the heart sick (Prov. 13:12). This is a common experience for people who are facing chronic illness or terminal diagnoses.

The Christian Hope

However, as Christians, we have a hope that is different from the world's hope. Our hope is not based on our circumstances, but on the sovereignty and power of God. We can trust that God is working all things together for our good, even in the midst of suffering (Rom. 8:28). This hope is not a fleeting feeling, but a deep conviction that God is with us and will ultimately bring us through our struggles. As the psalmist says, "Those who sow in tears will reap in joy" (Ps. 126:5).

Finding Hope in Suffering

While it may seem counterintuitive, suffering can actually be a catalyst for hope. When we face our mortality, we are forced to confront our own limitations and the reality of our need for God. This can lead to a deeper trust and dependence on God, which can be a source of hope. As Job says, "Though he slay me, yet will I trust in him" (Job 13:15). This is not a naive or Pollyannaish hope, but a hope that is grounded in the character and promises of God. We can trust that God is working all things together for our good, even in the midst of suffering. And ultimately, we can trust that God will bring us through our struggles and into a place of eternal joy and peace.
