What if I can't afford to live?
The Financial Struggle and the Call to Faith
As Christians, we often find ourselves facing financial struggles, wondering how we can afford to live. The world's values and priorities seem to emphasize material wealth and success above all else. The tabloids and celebrity magazines promote a lifestyle of accumulation, dining, and indulgence as the epitome of living. However, as followers of Jesus Christ, we are called to a different way of living. We are called to live by faith, trusting in God's provision and guidance, rather than relying on our own financial means.
The Dangers of Prioritizing Material Wealth
When we prioritize material wealth and success above all else, we risk losing sight of what truly matters. As the Bible says, "you cannot take your house with you, but you will surely take your soul with you" (Luke 12:15). We build houses to live in, not for ambitious display. Anything beyond our needs is superfluous and useless. In our pursuit of wealth and success, we may find ourselves in a place of testing, where our own welfare becomes the primary concern. However, as followers of Jesus, we are called to joyfully waive our right to make our own choices and allow God to make our decisions for us.
Embracing the Discipline of Faith
The Bible teaches us that Jesus Christ, though He was rich, became poor so that we might become rich through His poverty (2 Corinthians 8:9). We are called to live by faith, trusting in God's provision and guidance. This requires a discipline of surrendering our own desires and priorities to God's will. As the Bible says, "Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus" (Philippians 2:5). We must be willing to live in poverty, not just financially, but also in terms of our own desires and priorities. By embracing this discipline of faith, we can find true wealth and fulfillment in our relationship with God. As the Bible says, "I will run the way of your commands, for you have set my heart free" (Psalm 119:32). We are free to live by faith, trusting in God's provision and guidance, and finding true wealth and fulfillment in our relationship with Him.
