The Illusion of Security through Wealth

The idea of retiring early and affording a comfortable lifestyle is often tied to the notion of accumulating wealth. However, the Bible cautions against the illusion of security that wealth provides. In the parable of the wealthy landowner, Jesus teaches that the pursuit of wealth and material possessions can lead to greed and emptiness (Luke 12:13-21). Similarly, the apostle Paul warns that "the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil" (1 Timothy 6:10). This is not to say that one cannot accumulate wealth, but rather that wealth should not be the primary focus of our lives.

The Importance of Tithing and Stewardship

The Bible teaches that our finances are a sacred trust, and that we are responsible to God for how we manage them. Tithing, or giving 10% of our income to the local church, is a biblical principle that demonstrates our trust in God's provision and our commitment to His kingdom. By tithing, we are not only obeying God's command, but also acknowledging that our wealth is not ours to keep, but rather a gift from Him. Ultimately, the question of whether we will be able to afford to retire is not one of financial security, but of faith and trust in God. We cannot control the future or insulate ourselves from all possible risks. Rather, we must learn to trust in God's sovereignty and provision, even in the midst of uncertainty. As the apostle Paul writes, "My God will supply all your needs according to his riches in glory in Christ Jesus" (Philippians 4:19).
