The Sovereignty of God in Suffering

When we face suffering, it's natural to ask, "Why did God allow this to happen?" We may wonder if God is somehow responsible for our pain or if He's abandoned us. However, as we delve into the Bible, we find that God is not the author of suffering, but rather, He is the One Who suffers with us. In the book of Psalms, we see the psalmist crying out to God, "My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?" (Psalm 22:1). This cry is not a rejection of God, but rather, a desperate plea for help in the midst of suffering.

God's Sovereignty and Human Suffering

The Bible teaches us that God is sovereign over all creation, including human suffering. This means that He is not limited by our circumstances, but rather, He is working through them to bring about His purposes. In the book of Job, we see Job's friends trying to make sense of his suffering, but ultimately, they realize that God is the One Who is working everything out for Job's good (Job 42:2). Similarly, in the book of Psalms, we see the psalmist coming to a place of trust in God, even in the midst of suffering, because he knows that God is working everything out for his good (Psalm 23:4).

Finding Hope in Suffering

So, why did God allow my friend to die? We may never fully understand the reasons behind God's sovereignty in our lives, but we can trust that He is working everything out for our good. As Jesus suffered on the cross, He cried out, "It is finished" (John 19:30), indicating that His suffering was not in vain. Similarly, when we suffer, we can trust that God is working through it to bring about His purposes. We can pray for healing, but ultimately, God's decision is the bottom line. The same is true when praying for someone's life. We don't have the final say over anyone's hour of death. The Bible teaches us to trust in God's sovereignty, even in the midst of suffering, and to find hope in His promise to bring us through it. (Romans 8:28) In the end, Jesus is the One Who suffered for us, and He is the One Who promises to bring us through our suffering to eternal life. (John 3:16)
