Preparing my children for a future without me has been a priority for Susan and me as we've raised Joshua and Rebecca. We've learned that it's essential to give them the space to complete tasks on their own, rather than doing everything for them. This helps them grow into independent and critical thinkers. By doing so, we're teaching them to master their wills in obedience, which will serve them well as they become men and women of true strength.

As they've grown older, we've had to adapt our approach. When they were younger, drawing a line in the sand was essential, but now, as teenagers, they need a more nuanced approach. We've come to realize that it's not about being perfect, but about being wise and discerning in our interactions with them. We need to guard their hearts and help them know themselves, while also recognizing our own emotionally unhealthy tendencies and not burdening them with our unresolved issues.

As Joshua and Rebecca prepare to leave the nest, we're focusing on giving them the courage to run their own lives. We're acknowledging their readiness to take on new challenges and affirming their character, competence, and calling. We're saying, "We believe in you, and we know you have the strength and wisdom to make decisions and navigate the world on your own." By doing so, we're giving them the confidence they need to succeed and thrive in a world that can be both exciting and intimidating.
