Your Question:
Is there really a God when things like this happen?
Answer:
As a pastor, I've often grappled with this question. The idea that God causes all things to happen, yet allows for human free will, can be a difficult concept to wrap your head around. However, I believe that the Bible presents a clear picture of God's sovereignty and control over all things. The Old Testament writers, in particular, saw God as the all-powerful determiner of everything that occurs. When we look at the world around us, it's easy to get caught up in the idea that many things are outside of God's control. But the Bible teaches us that even natural occurrences, like rain and snow, are not simply random events, but are instead caused by God's hand. This is not to say that God causes evil or suffering, but rather that He allows us to make choices that can lead to those outcomes. As I reflect on my own life and the lives of those around me, I am reminded of the many times when God has intervened in ways that seem impossible or supernatural. My wife Susan and I have experienced the call of God in our lives, and it has been accompanied by an undercurrent of the supernatural. This is not to say that God causes all things to happen in a dramatic or flashy way, but rather that He is always at work, guiding and directing us towards His purposes.
