Why does god seem so silent in my suffering?
The question of why God seems silent in suffering is a deeply personal and complex one. It is natural to feel like God is distant or unresponsive when we are experiencing pain or hardship. However, as the psalmist says, "Why are you cast down, O my soul, and why are you disquieted within me? Hope in God; for I shall yet praise him, my salvation and my God" (Psalm 43:5). This verse reminds us that God is not silent, but rather, He is speaking to us in our suffering. He is whispering to us, speaking in our conscience, and even shouting to us in our pain (C.S. Lewis, The Problem of Pain). The key is to be attentive and receptive to His voice, even when it is not what we want to hear.
When we feel like God is silent, it is often because we are not listening to Him. We are too focused on our own pain and suffering to hear His voice. We are like the disciples who were unable to stay awake and keep watch with Jesus in the Garden of Gethsemane (Matthew 26:40-41). We are so caught up in our own emotions and thoughts that we are not able to hear God's gentle whispers. However, when we take the time to reflect on our suffering, to seek God's face, and to ask Him for guidance, we can begin to hear His voice more clearly. As the psalmist says, "You have been my guide since my youth; from my mother's womb I have been bound to you. You have been to me like a faithful friend and have led me into your sanctuary" (Psalm 71:6). This reminds us that God has always been with us, guiding us and leading us through the darkest of times.
The silence of God in suffering can also be a sign of His trust in us. When God is silent, it is often because He is trusting us to be strong and to endure. He is trusting us to trust Him, even when we do not understand what is happening. As the psalmist says, "The Lord will give you the very blessings you ask if you refuse to go any further without them" (Psalm 81:10). This reminds us that God is always working in our lives, even when we do not see it. He is always speaking to us, guiding us, and leading us, even when we do not hear His voice. We must learn to trust in His silence, to trust that He is working in our lives, and to trust that He will bring us through our suffering. As the psalmist says, "I will lift up my eyes to the hills— from whence comes my help? My help comes from the Lord, who made heaven and earth" (Psalm 121:1-2). This reminds us that our help comes from God, and that He is always with us, even in the darkest of times.
