The Absurdity of Life without God

The idea that life is meaningless without God is a theme that is echoed throughout the Bible. In Ecclesiastes 1:2-3, the author writes, "Meaningless! Meaningless! says the Teacher. Utterly meaningless! Everything is meaningless." This sentiment is echoed in other parts of the Bible, such as Psalm 8:4, which asks, "What is mankind that you are mindful of them, human beings that you care for them?" The idea is that without a transcendent basis for purpose, life is ultimately meaningless and without significance.

The Search for Meaning in a Godless World

In the absence of a transcendent basis for purpose, many people turn to existentialism, which emphasizes the existence of the individual person as a free and responsible agent. According to existentialism, our purpose in life is to create our own meaning and purpose. However, this approach is ultimately unsatisfying, as it lacks a transcendent justification for our values and goals. As the philosopher Albert Camus noted, "If there is no God, then our lives are but a brief flicker in an endless and meaningless universe." In this view, our purpose is reduced to our own individual decisions and choices, which can be arbitrary and capricious.

Finding Purpose in a Relationship with God

In contrast, the Bible offers a different perspective on purpose in life. According to Psalm 16:11, our purpose is to "behold your face in righteousness." This is not just a vague or abstract concept, but a concrete and personal relationship with God. When we are speaking about purpose in life, we must consider the reason that God created us: to glorify him. As the Bible says in Isaiah 43:7, "Everyone who is called by my name, whom I created for my glory, whom I formed and made." This is the key to finding purpose in life: a personal relationship with God that gives our lives meaning and significance. When we are living for God's glory, we are living a life that is meaningful and purposeful, even in the face of adversity and uncertainty.
