Finding Comfort in a Terminal Illness

When faced with a terminal illness, it can be challenging to find comfort. The weight of impending mortality can be overwhelming, and the pain and suffering can be excruciating. However, as Christians, we have a source of comfort that can sustain us through even the darkest of times. Our comfort is not in our own strength or resilience, but in the fact that we belong body and soul, in life and in death, to our Lord Jesus Christ (Heidelberg Catechism, Q. 1). This truth can be a powerful source of comfort, especially in the face of suffering.

Psalm 130 is a powerful example of how we can find comfort in God's presence, even in the midst of suffering. The psalmist writes, "Out of the depths I cry to you, O Lord; Lord, hear my voice. Let your ears be attentive to my cry for mercy. If you, O Lord, kept a record of sins, Lord, who could stand?" (Psalm 130:1-3). The psalmist is honest about his pain and despair, and yet he is also aware of God's presence and mercy. This is a powerful reminder that God is near, even in the midst of suffering. As we speak the prayers of the psalms, we are reminded that God is our healer, our comfort, and our hope.

In the face of terminal illness, it's essential to keep Christ close. We must not rely on our own strength or resilience, but on the power of Christ to sustain us. As the apostle Paul writes, "I have learned to be content whatever the circumstances. I know what it is to be in need, and I know what it is to have plenty. I have learned the secret of being content in any and every situation, whether well fed or hungry, whether living in plenty or in want" (Philippians 4:11-12). This is not to say that we will not experience pain or suffering, but that we can find comfort in Christ, even in the midst of it. As we speak the prayers of the psalms and keep Christ close, we can find the comfort we need to face whatever lies ahead.
