Why Does God Allow Suffering?

The question of why God allows suffering is a profound and complex issue that has puzzled many. While it may seem that God is not good if he allows suffering, this perspective is incomplete. We must consider the idea that God has good reasons for allowing suffering, even if they are not immediately apparent to us. In fact, the Bible teaches that God uses suffering to bring about spiritual growth and maturity in our lives. When we face challenges and difficulties, we are forced to rely on God and trust in His sovereignty.

The Bible also teaches that God allows suffering in order to bring about His purposes. This may involve allowing suffering that appears pointless within our limited framework, but is seen to have been justly permitted by God within His wider framework. For example, the apostle Paul wrote, "And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good, for those who are called according to his purpose" (Romans 8:28). This verse suggests that even in the midst of suffering, God is working everything out for our good.

Ultimately, the question of why God allows suffering is not just an intellectual question, but a personal one. How we respond to suffering is a reflection of our relationship with God. When we face suffering, we have the opportunity to draw closer to God and trust in His goodness, even when we don't understand. As C.S. Lewis said, "God whispers to us in our pleasures, speaks in our conscience, but shouts in our pains: it is His megaphone to rouse a deaf world." In this sense, suffering can be a catalyst for spiritual growth and a deeper relationship with God. The point of our existence is relationship with Him, and finding Him in our suffering is the point.
