Biblical Answer

The Bible says that lying is a serious sin against God, against the Church, and against love. It is a violation of the truth that includes a conscious intent to deceive. Lying is a form of deception that denies the character of God, who is truth, and whose word embodies truth. Jesus said, "I am ... the truth" (Jn 14:6), and he has given us the Spirit of truth (John 14:17). The Bible teaches that lying is wrong not only because of the great harm it causes to others, but also because it is a spiritual issue that affects our relationship with God. As the author of Hebrews says, "It is impossible for God to lie" (Heb. 6:18), and we are called to be truthful in all our interactions with others.

The Bible provides numerous examples of the consequences of lying. In Proverbs 19:5, it says that lying will be far more pleasant than the consequences of lying. The Bible also warns that a false witness will not go unpunished, and he who speaks lies will not escape (Proverbs 19:5). In the book of Acts, Ananias and Sapphira were struck down by God for lying to the Holy Spirit and to God (Acts 5:1-11). The Bible teaches that lying is a form of disobedience to God, and that those who lie will face the consequences of their actions. As Paul says in Colossians 3:9-10, "Do not lie to one another, seeing that you have put off the old self with its practices and have put on the new self, which is being renewed in knowledge after the image of its creator."
