Biblical Answer

The Bible is clear that lying is a serious sin against God, against the Church, and against love. The Bible teaches that lying is a form of deception, which denies the character of God who is truth (Heb 6:18) and whose word embodies truth (Jn 17:17). Jesus said, I am ... the truth (Jn 14:6), and he has given us the Spirit of truth (John 14:17). The Bible warns that a false witness will not go unpunished, and he who speaks lies will not escape (Proverbs 19:5). In fact, the Bible says that God is not human that he should lie or change his mind (Num. 23:19; 1 Sam. 15:29; cf. Ps. 89:35; Isa. 31:2). It is impossible for God to lie (Titus 1:2; Heb. 6:18), and Jesus repeatedly says, I tell you the truth.

The Bible teaches that lying is a form of rebellion against God, and it can lead to severe consequences. In the Bible, God struck down Ananias and Sapphira in the first church because they lied to Him (Acts 5:1-11). The Bible also warns that those who lie will not be able to escape the consequences of their actions. In Revelation 21:8, it is written that all liars will be found in the lake that burns with fire and sulphur far from the heavenly city. The Bible teaches that lying is a sin that can destroy relationships and lead to spiritual death. In James 1:26, it is written that anyone who lies is a liar and a hypocrite, and such people will not inherit the kingdom of God.

The Bible teaches that we must turn from lies and seek to live a life of truth. Jesus says, Simply let your Yes be Yes, and your No, No (Matthew 5:37). We must not weasel out of the truth by using deceitful words or actions. Instead, we must seek to live a life of integrity and honesty, where our words and actions align with the truth. The Bible teaches that we must present ourselves as being truthful, never being ashamed (2 Timothy 2:15). We must seek to live a life that reflects the character of God, who is truth (Heb 6:18). By turning from lies and seeking to live a life of truth, we can experience spiritual growth and become more like Christ.
