Can I still find purpose in life if I'm not working?

As a Christian, I believe that our purpose in life is not solely defined by our occupation or work. In fact, the Bible teaches that our purpose is to glorify God and enjoy Him forever (Psalm 16:11). This purpose is not limited to our work, but is a fundamental aspect of our being as image-bearers of God. As Esther Reed writes in her book Good Work: Christian Ethics in the Workplace, "We are created to do good work, but our work is not our purpose" (Reed, 2010). Our purpose is rooted in our relationship with God and is not dependent on our employment status.

However, this does not mean that we should not have a plan or purpose in our daily lives. In fact, the Bible encourages us to plan our work and work our plan (Proverbs 21:5). As Os Guinness notes in his book The Call, "We make our own purpose. We make our own joy" (Guinness, 2003). This means that even if we are not working in a traditional sense, we can still find purpose in our daily lives by focusing on our relationship with God and seeking to glorify Him in all that we do. We can find purpose in caring for our families, volunteering in our communities, or pursuing hobbies and interests that bring us joy and fulfillment.

Ultimately, our purpose in life is not defined by our work or occupation, but by our relationship with God. As Christians, we are called to live for what matters and to do good work that honors God (Ephesians 2:10). Whether we are working or not, we can still find purpose in our daily lives by focusing on our relationship with God and seeking to glorify Him in all that we do. As Guinness writes, "If you don't have a purpose and plan, you'll wander all over the place" (Guinness, 2003). But with a clear purpose and plan, we can live a life that is filled with meaning and purpose, even if we are not working in a traditional sense.
