Your Question:
How do we choose between safety and freedom?
Answer:
As a pastor and a husband, I've had to think a lot about the balance between safety and freedom. To me, safety and freedom are not mutually exclusive, but rather complementary. When I think about the concept of freedom, I think about it in spiritual terms. Freedom is not just about being able to do whatever we want, but about being free to live as God intended us to live. This means being free from the bondage of sin and being able to make choices that align with God's will. However, this doesn't mean that we should be reckless or irresponsible in our choices. As the Bible says, "You were called to freedom, brothers. Only do not use your freedom as an opportunity for the flesh, but through love serve one another" (Galatians 5:13). This means that with freedom comes the responsibility to consider how our choices might impact others and to act in a way that brings life and not harm. In terms of choosing between safety and freedom, I think it's about finding a balance between the two. Sometimes, safety might require us to limit our freedom in certain areas, but this doesn't mean that we should sacrifice our freedom entirely. Rather, it's about being wise and responsible in our choices, taking into account the potential consequences of our actions. As a parent, I try to teach my kids to be responsible and wise in their choices, and as a pastor, I try to help my congregation understand the importance of balancing freedom with responsibility.
