How do we prioritize what's truly important?
The Importance of Prioritizing
Prioritizing is a crucial aspect of life, especially when it comes to values and relationships. As we navigate our daily lives, we must intentionally prioritize what is truly important. Our children are watching and experiencing how we prioritize our values, and one misguided response or remark can have a lasting impact. In setting priorities, we must become directed persons rather than driven persons, learning to examine for inefficiency, and starting at the bottom and cutting. This means intentionally making space for what truly matters and cutting back on non-essential activities that steal away our time and energy.
Putting God First
In the midst of prioritizing, it is essential to remember that God should be our ultimate priority. As Ravi Zacharias notes, "If it's important to you, then it's important to God. Because you are important to God." This means giving priority to our relationship with God, gathered worship with our Bibles and hearts open to Him, and daily opening the Scriptures for ourselves and teaching them to our children. By keeping our lives open to God, we can maintain a position of concentration on Him, even amidst the busyness of life. This, in turn, helps us to redirect our dreams, reevaluate our priorities, and slow down long enough to look at someone else's opinions or needs.
The Ultimate Reality
Ultimately, our priorities should be centered on the ultimate reality – God. The Bible, the historic Creeds, and orthodoxy are important because God is the source and sustainer of all that is. The doctrine of Christ is the most important doctrine in terms of our redemption, and the Bible is the most important book because it contains the truth about God and our relationship with Him. By recognizing the importance of God in our lives, we can begin to prioritize what truly matters, putting Him first in all aspects of our lives. This, in turn, will help us to cultivate a life of reverence, care, and devotion to God, and to live a life that reflects His character and values.
