Uncertainty in Times

Navigating uncertain times can be challenging, especially when we're accustomed to having a sense of control over our lives. However, uncertainty is an inherent part of life, and it's essential to learn how to navigate it effectively. As the Bible teaches, "Our natural inclination is to be so precise, trying always to forecast accurately what will happen next that we look upon uncertainty as a bad thing" (1 John 3:2). But uncertainty can actually work in us a trusting that we sink not into despair.

In uncertain times, it's crucial to focus on the present moment rather than trying to predict the future. As the philosopher J.M.E. McTaggart noted, "We measure times as they are passing, by perceiving them; but past, which now are not, or the future, which are not yet, who can measure? unless a man shall presume to say, that can be measured, which is not." By being present in the moment, we can find peace and contentment, even in the midst of uncertainty. This is in line with the biblical teaching to "Enjoy time with a never merely conscious of the now, I am always looking backwards and forwards, folding my memories and my expectations into my experience of the present" (adapted from Psalm 90:12).

In navigating uncertain times, it's essential to remember that God is sovereign and in control, even when we don't understand what's happening. As the Bible teaches, "The Lord works out everything for his own ends—even the wicked for the day of disaster" (Proverbs 16:4). This means that we can trust God's plan, even when we're uncertain about the future. By focusing on the present moment and trusting in God's sovereignty, we can find peace and guidance in uncertain times. As the Bible says, "Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to him, and he will make your paths straight" (Proverbs 3:5-6).
