The Bible's View of God's Jealousy

The Bible presents God's jealousy as a holy and righteous attribute. It is not an emotion, but an activity, motivated by God's regard for His holy name, will, and government. God's jealousy is a personal element that reveals His covenant love for His own people. In the Old Testament, God's jealousy is often linked with His protection of His people from idolatry and false worship. Those who sacrifice to demons provoke God to jealousy, leading to judgment and destruction (Deut. 32:16-17, 21).

God's Jealousy as Protection of His Honor

God's jealousy is a desire to protect His own honor and righteousness. He commands His people not to bow down to idols or serve them, saying, "For I the Lord your God am a jealous God" (Ex. 20:5). God's jealousy is not a petty envy, but a profound caring and total unwillingness to tolerate idolatry. In the New Testament, Paul writes that the Lord is a jealous God and avenges (Nahum 1:2, RV). God's jealousy is a manifestation of His covenant love for His people, and He will not tolerate anything that threatens that relationship.

The Difference Between God's Jealousy and Human Jealousy

While human jealousy is often wrong and leads to pride, anger, and destruction, God's jealousy is holy and righteous. It is a desire to protect His honor and righteousness, not a petty envy of legitimate competition. God's jealousy is a manifestation of His covenant love for His people, and He will not tolerate anything that threatens that relationship. In contrast to human jealousy, which is often self-centered and destructive, God's jealousy is a selfless and redemptive attribute that seeks to protect and preserve His people.
