Understanding the Nature of Deception

Lying is a problem because it denies the character of God, who is truth (Heb 6:18) and whose word embodies truth (Jn 17:17). Jesus said, "I am... the truth" (Jn 14:6), emphasizing that there is nothing false in Him. Lying can become a habitual behavior, leading to the erosion of moral boundaries and a lack of accountability for one's actions. When someone is comfortable with lying, they may become capable of any crime, as they become skilled at concealing their sins.

The Consequences of Lying

The consequences of lying can be severe, both for the liar and the person being lied to. When someone lies to you, they are not only abusing you but also attempting to crush you. Lying can lead to a breakdown in trust and relationships, as well as a sense of isolation and loneliness. In the context of addiction, lying can exacerbate the problem, as individuals may feel compelled to continue lying to avoid consequences or maintain a false sense of control.
